Abstracts in acrylic & ink by Jodi Ohl

Have you seen my friend Jodi Ohl's book? Here's a picture of the cover, so beautiful; I am in the book, on page 138 to be precise; it was so sweet of Jodi to include me!
Abstracts in Acrylic & Ink by Jodi Ohl
If you are interested in painting abstracts, there is a lot to love about this book. As you all know, I've painted my fair share of abstracts and am quite impressed with Jodi's great way of organizing information in an accessible manner. She includes a ton of fun techniques with different substrates (Yupo! Claybord!) and ways to create texture (alcohol! Crackle medium!). If you aren't inspired by all the goodness in this book, well, your heart must simply be dead to abstracts.
LOL
Seriously though.....
Stencils and scribbles and doodles and painted papers, you know how much I love all these things, I feel like Jodi crawled into my head and put together a book talking about all my favorite stuff.
Bottom line: if you want to explore Mixed Media abstract painting, this is the book for you!
And, guess what.....I just happen to have a copy to give away.
Leave me a comment below as to why you are playful enough to paint abstracts!
Because painting abstracts takes a leap of faith and playfulness is definitely encouraged.
I will select a winner on April 17th.
Be sure and leave me your email in the comments. Email at blank dot com.

  1. Abstracts are hard for me. I can't seem to wrap my mind around them. This book would certainly help me and I adore Jodi's art.

  2. I was raised by a mother who wanted a better life for her kids than she had. She was extremely picky about our behavior, our dress, housekeeping, everything. As a result, I became a detail person, a perfectionist. Since retiring from 30 years as a teacher/school librarian I have been trying to let go of that control issue and try new things. I love paper arts, bookmaking, gelli printing, art journaling, card exchanges, etc. and would be thrilled to own Jodi's new book so I could try lots of new techniques, styles, and projects.

  4. I love Jodi's and your work MaryBeth! As for being playful enough...hmm..that's a hard one, usually abstracts come to me on those days where I have no purpose and I find it cathartic to just play with shapes and colors. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen!

  5. When I do anything abstract, it never fails that the parts I like best are the places where I dribbled, dropped my brush, dragged my sleeve through wet paint ... or stood back to evaluate and thought "where did that com from?" I would love to have some expert guidance! Pick me!?

  6. I'm in love with Jodi's work. Have been ever since I found her online a few years ago. Just recently got into abstracts and have a gazillion ideas...just not sure where to start. I'm sure her book would help me a lot with design and technique. Thanks so much for the opportunity to win one. :) cincat57@gmail.com

  7. Ooooooh! I love mixed media abstracts....but what a struggle. Any help can only be a plus. A generous giveaway Mary Beth. Hope I'm not excluded from the mix because I'm in Australia. Good luck to all.

  9. I am certainly playful enough to paint abstracts, but I've never tried painting them before. When I get all tightened up painting, I just remember, "If you can't take a leap of faith with a silly piece of paper, then where are you going to go in your life?" "Play, play, play and paint with orange," that's my motto!

  10. So funny, but i was just looking at Jodi's DVD of the same name yesterday. I didnt even realize there was a printed copy too. I love abstracts because I have never been able to draw anything specific, so abstracts dont require the ability to draw a face, or dog or whatever. I love Jodi Ohl and would love to win her book. Thank you. suzschultz23(at)aol(dot)com

  15. I like to make abstracts because it gives me the opportunity to include hidden symbolism and give the work a deeper meaning.
