We have a winner!! Congratulations: Kathy Gayhart Carter
As a Moon Child (a person born under the sign of Cancer), you gotta know that I love the moon and the stars. But Cancer is also a water sign (The Crab) so I love me some water.
Especially starfish.
Until earlier this year, I had never seen a starfish out in the wild. February is always a cold and yucky month in the Midwest and that is when we like to escape for a vacation. This past February we went to Roatan, an island off the coast of Honduras. If you grab this month's Somerset Studio, you can read my article about journaling during the trip.
Starfish collage, Mary Beth Shaw |
But I digress.
I saw starfish all over in Roatan! In fact, I could see them right off of our dock, red ones. I didn't even know starfish came in red.
During that trip, when I was working on my journal, I so wished I had sea stencils with me. StencilGirl didn't have any at the time. But NOW we do and woo hoo are they ever great! June Pfaff Daley has designed some awesome stencils that include some of my very favorite things related to the sea. I want to talk her in to doing Sea Urchins next, don't you think that would be special?
So......to celebrate the introduction of the Starfish stencil and to (of course) honor my love of starfish in general, I am going to give away a Starfish stencil.
Right here on this blog.
For me, I love the sea because it restores me and washes my soul clean.
Why do you love the sea?
All you have to do is leave me a comment about why you love the Sea. I will do my drawing on 8/11 at midnite, same as the Big drawing over at StencilGirl Talk. Entering here will get you into both drawings. But don't forget to hop all over to see the other Blogs and comment on them too, that was way you will have more chances at winning.

Deletestarfish! I love sitting by the sea listening to the shooosssh of the waves. i am lucky to live near Lake Ontario, which is our mini ocean. not wild about swimming in it, with fish and all, but love to be lulled by the shore.

DeleteStarfish....love the sea because no matter the challenge you are facing, when you are by the sea, every challenge is diminished.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely and wise comment. Thank you.
DeleteLOVE that stencil! I seem to always come to the sea (or other water) when I need to think about big decisions in my life. Something about the serenity of the water that helps me to see clearly.
ReplyDeleteHi Heidi! I wish I were close enough to the sea to visit more regularly, I completely get what you are saying :)
DeleteWhy do I love the sea? It calms my soul with the sounds of the waves, yet can stir up the senses to create. It talks to me when I'm sad or lonely and provides a beautiful companion for a long walk on the beach.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful thoughts. Thank you.
DeleteI love your blog. Thanks for sharing. I love the sea because of the uncluttered horizon line. Looking out and not seeing one single blip in the line and the knowing of how far out it goes on, just makes me calm. Lindi www.lindistevenson.com
ReplyDeleteAwe, thanks, Lindi :) An uncluttered horizon line....such an interesting way to think about the sea, I like that.
DeleteI used to be mesmerized by starfish at the Jersey shore when I was a kid. (So glad you got to see one!) Now I live on the island of Martha's Vineyard and we have no starfish, but we do have the serenity that the ocean waves offer when the mind needs clearing.
ReplyDeleteYou are lucky to be so close to the shore. That is so wonderful :)
DeleteI also grew up in the Midwest but lived by Lake Michigan. It was like an inland sea. I used to love to watch the waves crashing on the shore when it would storm.
ReplyDeleteI like Lake Michigan a lot, have spent time up near St. Joseph, Saugatuck, that area. I used to do an art fair up there and always looked forward to the visit. I would *love* a storm by the shore.
DeleteBeuatiful collage Mary Beth! I love the colours you used.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda :)
DeleteStunning collage! I am waiting for my next issue of the magazine to arrive. I wished they were published more frequently :)

ReplyDeleteThe seaside evokes childhood holiday memories. Great stencil.
ReplyDeleteLove the stencil just as I love the sea: it's always changing - one moment it's calm and comforting, the next it's cruel and fearsome - but it's always an inspiration for art work.
ReplyDeleteI too am a cancer and need water to breathe, be calmed and soothed. Need to just sit & look at the seas during the year if possible.

ReplyDeleteThe sea is so soothing! Love the lull of the waves...
ReplyDeleteThe Ocean/beach is my temple. I go there to pray and have the quality "me" time I need - every couple of days! I live in the Pacific Northwest so I am very very lucky that way! The love of the sea was a gift from my late mother! Thanks for the hop!
ReplyDeleteBeing by any water is relaxing. The sounds are so soothing. You can look out on the water and talk to God.
ReplyDeleteThe ocean means I am home since I was raised on the west coast. I use to live in New Orleans and fly to Oregon every summer just to go to the beach. Once I saw the ocean I knew I was as close to home as I was ever going to get.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a real starfish. The closest I've ever seen is Patrick Starfish on Spongebob. I think they are one of God's coolest looking creatures. I love all the texture in your piece. How did you create it?? I've only been to the ocean a handful of times in my whole life, but I will listen to the sounds of the ocean as a way to relax and "TRY" to meditate. The sounds of the ocean are very relaxing and soothing. Thanks for sharing the story and the Art. Have a great weekend. (((HUGS)))
ReplyDeleteI love star fish they are even more interesting when they are alive :) thanks
ReplyDeletethe sea is everything! It washes away and cleanses! IT is peace. Love the stencils
ReplyDeleteWhat's not to love? The relaxing sound of the waves crashing in your thoughts....the smell of salt on the air....that feeling you get in your soul when your toes wiggle in the cold damp sand.....ahhhh.
ReplyDeleteGreat stencils!
ReplyDeleteI love the sea for the wonderful sound it makes as it rushes up to the shore. I have a CD of ocean sounds I listen to before bed every nite.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary Beth, these stencils are awesome - I haven't painted anything with a sea theme, but I do like the sound and calmness of it. We went to visit my daughter in Maui and felt so relaxed listening to the waves crashing against the cliffs. I want to return next year - it was the best vacation my husband and I had ever taken. Thanks for the chance to win the stencils too!

Love this new stencil! I love walking on the beach, the sand, the driftwood, the sunshine!
ReplyDeleteI love the sea because it makes me feel small. It puts things in perspective for me and helps me to see the big picture. As such, an annual trip to the beach is a must. These stencils would be great for the journal/scrapbooking spreads that I do on those trips. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI like to walk along the beach on a nice spring, early summer day with the breeze in my face.

The sea. Salty, briny breezes blowing your hair. gritty sand between your toes. delicious waves lapping at my ankles, begging me to immerse my self in its bouyant waters.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, beautiful starfish collage, Mary Beth! So glad your amazing art is on this blog hop!!
ReplyDeleteGreat project!! Love the starfish!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE this stencil!
ReplyDeleteGreat stencil giveaway. Fingers crossed!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the sea because it is so relaxing to hear the water lapping against the shore and inhaling the refreshing air.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing more soothing than wandering along a beach enjoying the view and admiring the treasures as you go... an interesting shell, a crab scuttling back to the water, starfish clinging to the rocks. The rhythmic sound of the waves and the calling of the birds has a calming effect on my occasional stressed out soul.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting a giveaway!
I love the water too (I'm a Libra) - the starfish, seahorses, shells, the colors of the sand and water and fish..........so calming and relaxing. Seems to put me back on even keel ! Love the colors in your collage !
ReplyDeleteBeing another "Moon Child" born under the sign of Cancer water is one of my "Big" creative forces....I can go there and be totally revived!!!!
ReplyDeleteI used to live on Galveston Island and would fall asleep to the sound of the surf. I really miss it. Oh, and my rising sign is Pisces! ;)
ReplyDeleteI was fortunate enough to live 5 minutes from the Pacific Ocean during a difficult time in my life. I escaped as often as I could in the evenings to hear the waves against the sand. It soothed my spirit in a way nothing else ever has.
ReplyDeleteI love your stencils! They rock! I’d love to win one, as well! ;)
ReplyDelete~Erica
I love the smell of the ocean.
ReplyDeleteI love your starfish.. the texture of its skin/shell is everything I would imagine one to be like. Unfortunately.. I have never been to the sea or ocean.. I am from the Midwest..my beaches are only along lakes.. Your star reminds me of the movie with Darryl Hannah.. where she plays the mermaid.. I think of how real.. and how much texture they added to her tail.. I think I would love to experience the sea or the ocean.. just to be on a scavenger hunt.. and see how many things I could find affiliated with everything I know and have heard about it over the years..
ReplyDeleteBeautiful new stencils.....I love the sense of peace near the sea.
ReplyDeleteLove these starfish! Walking on the beach and collecting treasures is the most calming thing I can think of.
ReplyDeleteI love walking on the beach, feeling the sand beneath my feet, hearing the waves wash in and out, seeing and hearing the gulls all make me feel at home even though I live about 6 hours from the beach. I love being in the surf, bubbles wave over you, the sun beaming down, what a wonderful place to be at the beach, peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. I love the shells, the life all around is wonderful! I love the new stencils!
ReplyDeleteWe are going to Florida next month.. I can't wait. The sea is soul restoring! chefl@swbell.net
ReplyDeletebest starfish I've ever seen were in tidepools along Big Sur coastline... love these starfish stencils.
ReplyDeleteI love the sea for the sound. so relaxing. Have an awesome day. Smilz
ReplyDeleteI am about 12 miles from the beach & my "guys" love to surf fish.
ReplyDeleteI sit and read under a canopy near the large driftwood and go for shell walks.
How about a driftwood stencil?
Ooooh, l like the idea of a driftwood stencil, that would be nice!
DeleteI love the sea for the smell and the sounds!
ReplyDeleteYes, the smell!!
